AI Story Summary Generator
Turn any story into the exact summary you need with the Examples.com AI Story Summary Generator. Describe your plot or paste your manuscript, choose a summary type, genre, and tone, and let AI write a back cover blurb, query synopsis, logline, book report, or chapter recap — with the right spoiler policy built in for each.
How to Use the AI Story Summary Generator
Step 1: Describe Your Story or Paste Your Manuscript
- Story Description / Manuscript: Describe your plot in the main text field, such as “A young apprentice mage discovers she’s the last descendant of an ancient order and must master forbidden magic to stop a rising darkness,” or paste your full manuscript text. You can also drag and drop or browse for a file (TXT, PDF, or Word document) up to 2MB.
Step 2: Choose a Summary Type
- Summary Type: Select Back Cover Blurb, Spoiler-Free Teaser, Query Letter Synopsis, Elevator Pitch (Logline), Book Report Summary, or Chapter-by-Chapter Recap. Each type follows the real-world rules of its format — a back cover blurb never reveals the ending, while a query synopsis and book report summary do. Back Cover Blurb is selected by default.
Step 3: Choose a Genre
- Genre: Select from Fantasy, Science Fiction, Mystery / Thriller, Romance, Horror, Historical Fiction, Literary Fiction, Young Adult, Children’s, Memoir / Non-Fiction, Self-Help, Business, or Poetry. Fantasy is selected by default.
Step 4: Choose a Tone and Length
- Tone: Select Neutral & Balanced, Dark & Mysterious, Whimsical & Playful, Epic & Grand, Romantic & Emotional, Humorous & Witty, Poetic & Lyrical, or Formal & Professional.
- Summary Length: Choose Short, Medium, or Long. (Length doesn’t apply to Elevator Pitch, which is always one or two sentences.)
Step 5: Generate Your Story Summary
- Generate Button: Click the purple “Generate Free Story Summary” button. The AI returns a summary in the exact format you chose, following that format’s spoiler rules and matching your genre and tone.
Step 6: Edit, Copy, or Download Your Result
- Edit: Click “Edit” to make changes directly to the summary before copying or downloading.
- Copy All: Copies the summary to your clipboard as plain text.
- Download: Save the result as a TXT, Word, or PDF file for later use or to share with others.
AI Story Summary Generator Formula
The AI Story Summary Generator follows a structured input-to-output process to produce a summary that’s accurate, correctly shaped, and spoiler-appropriate:
Story Summary Quality = Story Fidelity + Type Structure + Spoiler Policy + Genre & Tone Match
Where:
- Story Fidelity is whether every detail in the summary is actually grounded in the plot you described, with no invented characters or subplots that contradict it
- Type Structure is how closely the summary follows the expected shape of its format, since a logline reads nothing like a chapter-by-chapter recap
- Spoiler Policy is whether the summary correctly withholds the ending for marketing formats like a back cover blurb, or correctly reveals it for formats like a query synopsis that require it
- Genre & Tone Match is how well the summary reads like it belongs to your chosen genre, in the voice of your chosen tone
The more detail you give about your plot, characters, and stakes, the more accurate and compelling the generated summary will be.

Example 1: A Back Cover Blurb for a Fantasy Novel

Example 3: An Elevator Pitch for a Sci-Fi Concept
A writer needs a one-line pitch to describe their book quickly.
- Story: A colony ship’s AI must decide whether to wake the crew early when it detects an unknown signal.
- Summary Type: Elevator Pitch (Logline)
- Genre: Science Fiction
- Result: One or two punchy sentences capturing the protagonist, the conflict, and the stakes — regardless of the length setting chosen.

Does the tool ever reveal spoilers I don’t want revealed?
No — each Summary Type has a built-in spoiler policy. Back Cover Blurb and Spoiler-Free Teaser are instructed to never reveal the ending or major twists. Query Letter Synopsis, Book Report Summary, and Chapter-by-Chapter Recap are expected to include the ending, since that’s what those formats require in the real world.
What’s the difference between the summary types?
Back Cover Blurb and Spoiler-Free Teaser are marketing-style hooks that withhold the ending. Query Letter Synopsis is a professional, plot-revealing summary for literary agents. Elevator Pitch (Logline) is one or two sentences capturing the core concept. Book Report Summary is an objective educational overview. Chapter-by-Chapter Recap is a bulleted, sequential list of what happens in each part of the story.
Does the Genre and Tone setting actually change the summary?
Yes. The summary is written to match your chosen genre’s conventions and reader expectations, and your chosen tone shapes the voice throughout — from Dark & Mysterious to Humorous & Witty.
Does the Summary Length setting apply to every type?
It applies to every type except Elevator Pitch (Logline), which always produces exactly one or two sentences regardless of the length you select.
Can I paste my own manuscript instead of describing the plot?
Yes. You can paste your full manuscript or story text into the main field, or upload a TXT, PDF, or Word file (up to 2MB), and the tool will summarize based on that content.
Can I edit the generated summary afterward?
Yes. Click “Edit” to make changes directly to the summary, then use “Copy All” to copy it to your clipboard, or “Download” to save it as a TXT, Word, or PDF file.
