My
first
encounter
with
distributed
systems
wasn
'
t
in
a
classroom
—
it
was
in
my
parents
'
small
import
business
in
Oakland
,
where
I
built
a
simple
inventory
tracker
using
Python
and
SQLite
that
saved
them
nearly
twenty
hours
a
month
.
That
intersection
of
real
-
world
need
and
elegant
code
is
what
drives
me
toward
the
Software
Engineering
Internship
at
Helios
Labs
.
I
am
a
junior
at
UC
Berkeley
majoring
in
Computer
Science
with
a
minor
in
Data
Science
.
My
coursework
in
Operating
Systems
and
Database
Internals
gave
me
the
theoretical
foundation
to
reason
about
concurrency
and
storage
,
but
it
was
an
independent
study
on
consensus
algorithms
that
deepened
my
fascination
with
building
resilient
systems
.
I
finished
that
seminar
with
a
working
implementation
of
Raft
that
tolerated
arbitrary
leader
failure
and
network
partitions
—
a
project
that
taught
me
more
about
debugging
than
any
lecture
could
.
Last
summer
,
I
interned
at
CloudForm
,
a
cloud
-
provisioning
startup
in
San
Francisco
.
I
owned
the
migration
of
their
legacy
Terraform
provider
to
the
new
plugin
framework
,
reducing
configuration
errors
by
thirty
-
four
percent
and
cutting
average
provisioning
time
from
six
minutes
to
under
two
.
Beyond
the
metrics
,
the
experience
taught
me
to
write
defensive
code
,
to
treat
every
API
change
as
a
contract
,
and
to
communicate
technical
trade
-
offs
to
non
-
engineering
stakeholders
.
I
also
maintain
an
open
-
source
CLI
tool
for
local
Kubernetes
debugging
that
has
accumulated
over
twelve
hundred
GitHub
stars
and
contributions
from
seventeen
developers
across
three
continents
.
That
community
taught
me
that
good
software
is
as
much
about
documentation
and
empathy
as
it
is
about
algorithms
.
Helios
Labs

recent
work
on
zero
-
downtime
consensus
implementations
aligns
directly
with
my
research
interests
.
Your
engineering
blog

on
graceful
failover
strategies
is
required
reading
in
my
systems
study
group
,
and
your
decision
to
open

the

struck
me
as
the
kind
of
principled
leadership
the
industry
needs
.
I
am
eager
to

a

treats
reliability
engineering
as
craft

maintenance

and

as
