During
the
summer
of
2021,
while
volunteering
at
the
Westside
Atlanta
Community
Health
Center
,
I
met
a
patient
who
had
been
rationing
her
asthma
medication
for
three
months
because
her
employer
had
switched
to
a
high
-
deductible
insurance
plan
she
could
not
afford
to
use
.
As
I
watched
her
struggle
to
complete
a
simple
spirometry
test
,
I
understood
that
the
inhaler
sitting
locked
in
the
pharmacy
was
not
a
medical
failure
but
a
policy
failure
.
That
moment
crystallized
my
commitment
to
public
health
—
not
as
a
discipline
of
abstract
statistics
,
but
as
a
practice
of
structural
advocacy
that
keeps
people
from
getting
sick
in
the
first
place
.
I
graduated
magna
cum
laude
from
Spelman
College
with
a
B
.
S
.
in
Health
Sciences
and
a
minor
in
Statistics
.
My
coursework
in
epidemiology
,
biostatistics
,
and
the
social
determinants
of
health
provided
me
with
a
rigorous
analytical
foundation
,
but
it
was
my
senior
thesis
on
food
swamp
prevalence
in
Atlanta
'
s
NPU
-
V
neighborhoods
that
taught
me
how
to
translate
data
into
community
-
relevant
narratives
.
Using
ArcGIS
and
SAS
,
I
mapped
the
density
of
fast
-
food
retailers
relative
to
public
transit
corridors
and
correlated
these
patterns
with
emergency
department
visits
for
hypertension
and
diabetes
.
Presenting
these
findings
to
the
Atlanta
City
Council
'
s
Health
Committee
taught
me
that
effective
public
health
communication
must
bridge
the
gap
between
regression
coefficients
and
lived
experience
.
For
the
past
three
years
,
I
have
served
as
a
Health
Policy
Fellow
at
the
Georgia
Health
Collaborative
,
where
I
support
the
state
'
s
Medicaid
redetermination
outreach
efforts
.
I
designed
a
multi
-
lingual
text
-
message
campaign
that
reached
over
12,000
enrollees
during
the
unwinding
of
the
continuous
coverage
provision
,
reducing
administrative
disenrollment
by
18
percent
in
our
pilot
counties
.
I
also
coordinate
a
network
of
seventeen
community
health
workers
who
provide
in
-
person
navigation
assistance
in
rural
counties
where
broadband
access
makes
digital
outreach
ineffective
.
This
work
has
grounded
my
understanding
of
health
policy
in
the
friction
of
implementation
—
how
a
well
-
written
regulation
can
still
fail
when
it
does
not
account
for
transportation
insecurity
,
language
barriers
,
or
mistrust
of
government
institutions
.

as
a
research
assistant
at
the
Rollins
School
of
Public
Health
at
Emory
University
,
contributing
to
a
mixed
-
methods
study
on
HPV
vaccination
hesitancy
among
Black
adolescents
in
the
Atlanta
metro
area
.
I
conduct
qualitative
interviews
,
manage
REDCap
databases
,
and
perform
descriptive
statistical
analyses
in
R
.
This
experience
has
sharpened
my
appreciation
for
community
-
based
participatory
research
methodologies
and
has
reinforced
my
belief
that
the
communities
most
affected
by
health
disparities
must
lead
the
design
of
interventions
intended
to
serve
them
.

have
also
earned
my
CITI
certification
in
human
subjects
research
and
completed
advanced
training
in
STATA
and
Tableau

am

Master

Health

my
quantitative

drawn
to
the
intersection
of
health
economics
and
management
science

and
I
seek

of
payment
models
and
delivery
systems

I
can
assess
how
public
insurance

the

addressing

mortality
rates
through
a
combination
of
Medicaid
policy

community
health
infrastructure
investment

and

ensuring
that
the
communities
I
serve

the

a
recognition

our

and
that
systemic
inequities
demand
systemic
solutions
