My
first
real
encounter
with
psychology
was
not
in
a
textbook
but
in
a
community
clinic
in
Oakland
,
where
I
watched
a
trauma
therapist
help
a
six
-
year
-
old
boy
name
the
somatic
experience
of
a
panic
attack
. "

body
is
trying
to
protect
you
,"
she
told
him
, "
but
it
thinks
the
danger
is
still
here
."
The
boy
placed
his
hand
on
his
chest
,
breathed
slowly
,
and
looked
at
her
with
an
expression
I
can
only
describe
as
recognition
.
That
moment
when
a
child
reclaimed
agency
over
a
nervous
system
that
had
been
hijacked
by
adversity
crystallized
what
I
want
to
do
with
my
life
.
I
am
applying
to
the
doctoral
program
in
Clinical
Psychology
at
the
University
of
Washington
because
I
want
to
become
a
scientist
-
practitioner
capable
of
translating
affective
neuroscience
into
interventions
that
honor
both
the
biology
and
the
biography
of
trauma
.

I
completed
my
undergraduate
degree
in
Psychology
at
UC
Berkeley
in
2021,
graduating
with
highest
honors
and
a
concentration
in
behavioral
neuroscience
.
My
coursework
in
psychophysiology
,
cognitive
neuroscience
,
and
developmental
psychopathology
gave
me
a
vocabulary
for
the
phenomena
I
had
observed
clinically
,
but
it
was
my
senior
thesis
that
taught
me
to
generate
knowledge
rather
than
simply
consume
it
.
Working
under
Dr
.
Samuel
Okonkwo
in
the
Affective
Neuroscience
Lab
,
I
investigated
whether
baseline
respiratory
sinus
arrhythmia
(
RSA
)
could
predict
dissociative
symptomatology
in
children
exposed
to
chronic
domestic
conflict
.
I
recruited
forty
-
two
families
from
transitional
housing
programs
in
Alameda
County
,
administered
structured
clinical
interviews
and
the
Child
Dissociative
Checklist
,
recorded
five
-
minute
resting
electrocardiogram
epochs
,
and
processed
the
data
using
MATLAB
and
Python
.
One
participant
'
s
dataset
required
seventeen
hours
of
manual
artifact
correction
,
a
task
that
taught
me
the
invisible
labor
underlying
every
clean
waveform
.
Our
findings
that
higher
baseline
RSA
predicted
lower
dissociative
symptoms
only
in
children
with
secure
attachment
representations
were
submitted
as
a
poster
to
the
Society
for
Psychophysiological
Research
and
later
published
in
Development
and
Psychopathology
.
More
importantly
,
the
project
convinced
me
that
resilience
is
not
a
static
trait
but
a
dynamic
transaction
between
biology
and
relational
context
,
a
principle
that
now
anchors
my
research
interests
.
After
graduation
,
I
spent
two
years
as
a
Clinical
Research
Coordinator
at
the
UCSF
Trauma
Recovery
Center
,
where
I
managed
assessment
and
data
integrity
for
a
Phase
II
randomized
controlled
trial
of
MDMA
-
assisted
psychotherapy
for
severe
,
treatment
-
resistant
PTSD
.
The
work
was
methodologically
humbling
.
I
administered
the
CAPS
-5
at
baseline
,
midpoint
,
and
endpoint
;
tracked
adverse
events
;
maintained
the
regulatory
binder
;
and
coordinated
blood
draws
for
pharmacokinetic
substudies
.
Yet
the
most
formative
aspect
of
the
position
was
not
technical
but
human
.
I
sat
with
participants
as
they
revisited
memories
they
had
spent
decades
compressing
,
and
I
observed
clinicians
model
a
kind
of
presence
that
was
neither
distant
nor
absorbing
.
I
learned
that
trauma

treatment
is
less
about
excavating
the
past
than
about
changing
the
relationship
a
person
has
with
their
own
physiological
arousal
.
I
also
learned
that
our
best
interventions
fail
a
substantial
minority
of
patients
roughly
thirty
percent
in
our
sample
showed
non
-
response
and
I
became
preoccupied
with
the
question
of
how
to
predict
,
and
ultimately
prevent
,
those
outcomes
.
That
question
has
driven
every
professional
decision
I
have
made
since
.
My
immediate
research
goal
is
to
develop
predictive
models
of
treatment
response
that
integrate
autonomic
,
neuroendocrine
,
and
phenomenological
data
.
I
am
particularly
interested
in
the
transition
from
acute
stress
to
chronic
PTSD
,
and
in
identifying
biobehavioral
markers
that
distinguish
individuals
who
will
naturally
remit
from
those
who
require
targeted
intervention
.
The

of

program
is
uniquely
positioned
to
support
this
trajectory
.

predictors
of
Prolonged
Exposure
outcome

with
my
background
in
cardiac
psychophysiology

a
moderator
of
extinction
learning
.
I
am
equally
drawn
to
Dr
.
James
Park
'
s
research
on
racialized
trauma
and
culturally
adaptive
assessment
.
My
clinical
experience
has
made
me
acutely
aware
of
how
mainstream
protocols
can
inadvertently
pathologize
survival
behaviors
that
are
rational
within
oppressive
contexts
,
and
I
want
to
train
in
a
program
that
treats
cultural
specificity
not
as
an
afterthought
but
as
a
core
methodological
commitment
.
The
opportunity
to
bridge
quantitative
biomarker
research
with
community
-
engaged
qualitative
methods
is
rare
,
and
it
is
the
primary
reason
I
am
applying
here
.
In
the
long
term
,
I
intend
to
pursue
a
career
as
a
licensed
clinical
psychologist
in
an
academic
medical
center
,
dividing
my
time
between
patient
care
,
research
,
and
the
supervision
of
trainees
.
I
am
especially
interested
in
the
emerging
field
of
computational
psychiatry
using
multivariate
machine
-
learning
approaches
to
identify
latent
subtypes
of
trauma
-
related
psychopathology
that
cut
across
traditional
diagnostic
boundaries
.
I
believe
that
the
DSM
'
s
categorical
framework
has
impeded
mechanistic
understanding
,
and
I
hope
to
contribute
to
a
dimensional
,
biobehaviorally
grounded
alternative
that
still
speaks
the
clinical
language
of
relationships
,
meaning
,
and
suffering
.
Ultimately
,
my
ambition
is
to
help
build
precision
mental
health
tools
that
are
sophisticated
enough
to
model
individual
heterogeneity
and
accessible
enough
to
serve
the
communities
that
currently
bear
the
highest
burden
of
trauma
.

remembers
what
the
mind
tries
to
forget
a
truth
I
have
witnessed
in
clinic
rooms
,
lab
meetings
,
and
the
quiet
determination
of
research
participants
who
arrive
early
for
appointments
they
are
terrified
to
keep
.

want
to
spend
my
career
understanding
how
those
memories
are
encoded
,
how
they
can
be
transformed
,
and
how
clinicians
can
meet
patients
with
the
scientific
rigor
and
human
dignity
that
both
deserve
.
