his volume offers an independent biographical account of one of the most consequential fig-

ures in the modern understanding of mood disorders: Kay Redfield Jamison, clinical psycholo-

gist, professor of psychiatry, and author. She is unusual, perhaps unique, in the history of her field

for the fullness with which she has lived on both sides of the clinical divide — as a scientist who

helped build the contemporary science of manic-depressive illness, and as a patient whose own se-

vere bipolar disorder she has documented with uncommon candor.

Her memoir

An Unquiet Mind

(1995) gave the wider world a language for a condition long hidden be-

hind shame. Before its publication, the inner life of psychiatric illness was rarely described from

within, and almost never by a senior academic clinician. Jamison’s decision to write openly about

her manic highs, her psychotic episodes, her terrifying depressions, and her decades on lithium

transformed how patients, physicians, and the general public spoke about severe mental illness.

This biography follows the arc of that life: from a childhood on the Kansas prairie, through graduate

training in California in the first years of the psychopharmacological revolution, to a career that

ay Redfield Jamison was born on June 22, 1946, in Wichita, Kansas — a city of wheat elevators

and aircraft factories on the flat, enormous prairie of the American Midwest. She arrived in the

first full summer of the postwar boom, into a family that would leave an enduring mark on her sense

of what a human mind could be.

Her father was a career officer in the United States Air Force and a meteorologist by training — a man

of restless energy, wide enthusiasm, and a gift for talk. Her mother was an artist, more private, with a

painter’s way of looking at the world. Jamison has described a household in which weather — literal

and emotional — was a constant presence: sudden brightness, sudden storms. She would later recog-

nize in her father a powerful natural vitality, and in herself a temperament wired for intensity.

The family moved with her father’s postings, and Jamison grew up in a series of military communi-

ties — orderly, patriotic, mobile. She was an energetic and headstrong child, an avid reader who de-

voured books well beyond her grade level, and a self-described tomboy who loved horses, dogs, and

long afternoons of exploration under enormous skies. Kansas in the 1950s was a landscape of ex-

treme seasons, and she has spoken of the profound effect of that openness — the sense that the world

was vast and that the weather was a daily drama.

Even then, she has said, her moods ran higher and lower than those of the children around her.

There were stretches of sleeplessness and schemes of impossible ambition; there were gray periods

of withdrawal and sadness that she could not explain. In a child these oscillations were read as tem-

perament — spirited one season, moody the next. It was not until much later that they acquired a

name.

Unbeknownst to her at the time, Kansas also carried an unexpected thread of psychiatric history. The

Menninger Clinic in Topeka had made the state a center of American psychoanalysis and psychiatric

care, and the culture of the region was not wholly unfamiliar with conversations about the mind.

Jamison has acknowledged this inheritance with a certain wryness — the prairie that produced her

would also, in a sense, have been one of the few places where a career in the study of madness would

not have seemed entirely exotic.

Her father’s enthusiasm for the world was, in her later telling, infectious and formative. He intro-

duced her to the idea that energy and appetite for life were gifts to be used, not restrained. But she

also watched the cost of his temperament, and of her mother’s quieter artistic intensity, in the strains

of a marriage tested by distance, duty, and the military’s constant demands. The family was close, af-

fectionate, and complicated — a portrait of ordinary American life with an undercurrent of extraor-

dinary emotional weather.

By her mid-teens, Jamison was eager to leave the plains. She was drawn to California — to the ocean,

to the university, to the sense of possibility that the West Coast represented to her generation. In the

he University of California, Los Angeles, in the late 1960s was a place of extraordinary intellec-

tual ferment. The campus was roiled by the politics of the era — Vietnam, civil rights, the coun-

terculture — even as its laboratories and hospitals were quietly becoming engines of American sci-

ence. Jamison arrived with a fierce appetite for psychology and threw herself into the study of the

mind with the same intensity she had once reserved for books and horses.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1971 and her doctorate in clinical psychology in

1975, both from UCLA. Her clinical training placed her in hospital wards and outpatient clinics where

she encountered, for the first time, the raw phenomenology of severe mental illness: the racing

speech of mania, the immobile despair of melancholia, the terrifying logic of psychosis. For a young

clinician these were formative encounters, and they shaped her conviction that the study of mood

disorders had to begin with the lived experience of patients, not merely with diagnostic categories.

The intellectual moment mattered as much as the place. The late 1960s and early 1970s marked the

arrival of the first truly effective treatments for severe mood disorders. Lithium had recently been in-

troduced into American psychiatry — the Food and Drug Administration approved it for the treat-

ment of mania in 1970 — and it was transforming the prognosis of manic-depressive illness from a

lifetime of institutionalization to something approaching stability. Jamison was present at that trans-

formation, and it became the subject of her life’s work.

Her graduate years were also shadowed by personal events of enormous consequence. Her father

died suddenly during her student years at UCLA — a loss she has described as one of the defining

shocks of her early life, a fault line running beneath everything that followed. In the aftermath of that

loss, her own latent vulnerability to severe mood illness broke through the surface. She has dated

her first significant episodes of mood disturbance to her late teenage years, with the full syndrome of

manic-depressive illness emerging in her early twenties: sleeplessness, grandiosity, a frightening

acceleration of thought, and then the collapse into depths she could barely describe.

By her mid-twenties she had been hospitalized, had received the diagnosis of manic-depressive ill-

ness, and had been started on lithium — a medication she initially regarded with suspicion and, for a

time, refused. The story of that refusal, and of her eventual acceptance of treatment, would become

one of the defining narratives of her life and work. Like many patients, she feared that lithium would

blunt the very qualities she prized in herself — her intensity, her productivity, her sense of aliveness.

She later acknowledged that she resisted medication for years, in part because the early phases of

mania felt like brilliance rather than illness.

The discipline of clinical psychology, however, gave her a frame for her own experience. She learned

to observe her moods with the detachment of a diagnostician even as she endured them as a patient.

She completed her doctorate in 1975 and was invited to remain at UCLA, joining the faculty of the

School of Medicine. She was twenty-nine years old, trained in the newest methods of clinical re-

search, fluent in the emerging pharmacology of mood, and privately managing an illness for which

the only reliable remedy was one she had once feared. It was an uneasy beginning to a career that

would require, above all, stability — and it was a beginning she nearly did not survive to make.

he UCLA School of Medicine in the 1970s was one of the liveliest psychiatric research environ-

ments in the country, and Jamison moved quickly into its center. Her work focused on severe

mood disorders at a moment when the field was being rebuilt from first principles. The diagnostic

manual had recently been overhauled — the term “bipolar disorder” entered official psychiatric vo-

cabulary with DSM-III in 1980, replacing the older language of manic-depressive illness — and new

tools, from structured interviews to standardized rating scales, were making research more

rigorous.

Jamison helped establish the UCLA Affective Disorders Clinic, which she would direct for more than

two decades. The clinic was conceived as a place where research and treatment could inform one an-

other: patients received state-of-the-art care while contributing to a growing body of longitudinal

data on the course of bipolar illness. It became a model for academic mood-disorder programs

across the country, and it produced some of the most important naturalistic observations of how

bipolar disorder actually unfolds over a lifetime.

Her research interests were broad and consequential. She studied the phenomenology of manic-de-

pressive illness — its symptoms, its cycle, its subtypes; the long-term effectiveness of lithium prophy-

laxis; the problem of treatment adherence, which she understood from the inside; the genetics of

mood disorders in families; and the devastating comorbidity of suicide. Throughout, she was atten-

tive to a question that most of her colleagues considered unscientific: why was it that so many emi-

nent artists, writers, and composers appeared to suffer from illnesses of mood?

The most important professional collaboration of this period was with psychiatrist Frederick K.

Goodwin, then a leading researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health. Together they under-

took an enormous project: a comprehensive medical text on manic-depressive illness that would

synthesize everything known about the disorder — its biology, its genetics, its clinical presentation,

its treatment. The result,

Manic-Depressive Illness

, appeared in 1990 from Oxford University Press and

immediately became the standard reference in the field, a work of more than nine hundred pages

consulted by psychiatrists, researchers, and students around the world. A decade and a half later, the

two authors would return to the text for an expanded second edition.

Privately, these were years of hard-won equilibrium. Jamison lived what she later described as some-

thing close to a double life: the confident professor and clinician by day; and, in the small hours, a

woman managing a volatile and occasionally terrifying mind. She maintained her lithium regimen,

kept regular contact with her own psychiatrist, and built the external structure — teaching, writing,

the discipline of the clinic — that she has always credited with helping hold her life together. There

were relapses, including episodes that frightened her badly, but she learned to use her clinical

knowledge in her own service, to recognize the early signs of mania and depression, and to seek help

before collapse.

By 1990 she had achieved what few in academic medicine manage: simultaneous mastery of the sci-

ence of a disorder and intimate knowledge of its suffering. She was by then one of the world’s leading

authorities on bipolar illness — an authority grounded equally in her research, her patients, and her

own unspoken history.

That history was about to become public. The scientific community had benefited from her expertise

for fifteen years; the wider world had not yet met the woman behind the textbooks. That was about to

change.

he question of madness and creativity has haunted Western culture since antiquity, but in the

late twentieth century it acquired a scientific dimension. Researchers had begun to report ele-

vated rates of mood disorder among writers, artists, and their relatives — patterns that suggested a

genuine, if complex, association between temperamental extremes and the disposition to make art.

Jamison was uniquely positioned to explore this territory, and in 1993 she published

Touched with Fire:

Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament

The book was the first major modern treatment of the subject by a clinician-scientist. Drawing on bi-

ographical records, clinical studies, and the historical evidence of letters, journals, and hospital

records, Jamison examined the lives of poets, painters, and composers — figures such as Byron, Van

Gogh, Schumann, and Virginia Woolf — and made a careful, evidence-based case that manic-depres-

sive illness and the artistic temperament share psychological territory: intensity of emotion, rapidity

of thought, sensitivity to beauty and to suffering, and a metabolism of mood that swings between the

exalted and the despairing.

Equally important was what the book refused to claim. Jamison was emphatic that illness is not the

source of talent, that madness confers no gift, and that the suffering of artists should never be ro-

manticized. She argued, instead, that the traits that contribute to creative achievement — energy, flu-

ency, risk-taking, emotional range — overlap with the temperaments that, at their extreme, become

illness. The implication for treatment was crucial: she insisted that medication need not extinguish

creativity, and that many artists find, after stabilization, that their work is not diminished but made

sustainable. For patients who feared lithium as a form of creative suicide, the message was

liberating.

Touched with Fire

was widely read and vigorously debated. Some critics worried that the book would

glamorize mental illness; others felt it over-pathologized the lives of artists. Jamison answered both

objections with data and with a frank acknowledgment of the devastation untreated mania and de-

pression inflict. The book established her as a public intellectual who could move between the scien-

tific paper and the general reader, and it prepared the way for a far riskier project.

Through the late 1980s and early 1990s she had been quietly at work on a manuscript that no one in

academic psychiatry had attempted: a memoir of her own manic-depressive illness, written under

her own name. She has spoken of the reasons with characteristic clarity. Her patients, many of them

young and brilliant and terrified of treatment, needed to know that someone who had been where

they were could not only survive but flourish. Her colleagues, many of whom still regarded severe

mental illness as something that happened to other families, needed to see the face of the disease in

one of their own.

She also knew the risks. A senior professor of psychiatry disclosing that she had suffered psychotic

mania, had been hospitalized, and took lithium every day could cost her standing, her credibility,

perhaps her career. In a profession uneasy with physician-patients, the confession was without

precedent at her level. She proceeded anyway.

it describes, into the chaos of mania. Jamison’s subject is her own life: a Kansas childhood of

enormous skies and enormous moods; the dawning awareness that her emotional weather was not

normal; the first episodes of sleepless euphoria that felt, she wrote, like falling in love with the world;

and then the arrival of terror — the psychosis, the paranoia, the sense of a mind coming apart from

within.

The memoir is structured as a descent and a slow ascent. Jamison recounts her psychiatric hospital-

izations, her periods of suicide desire, her resistance to lithium, and her eventual, grudging, life-

saving acceptance of the drug. She is unsparing about what mania and depression actually feel like

— the grandiosity that precedes the fall, the leaden impossibility of ordinary tasks in melancholia,

the dangerous attractiveness of the high. And she writes with unusual honesty about the central

dilemma of her treatment: she loved parts of her illness, missed them when they were medicated

away, and had to grieve the loss of a self that was, in part, the source of her vitality.

Published in 1995, the book was an immediate critical and commercial success. It spent months on

bestseller lists, was translated into dozens of languages, and was greeted by reviewers as a work of

confessional literature as much as medical testimony. For the psychiatric profession, it was some-

thing else: an event. Here was a senior academic clinician — co-author of the standard textbook in

her field — describing from the inside the very illness she studied. The book was assigned in medical

schools, quoted in clinical papers, and handed from patient to patient like a lifeline.

Its cultural effect was broader still.

An Unquiet Mind

helped bring the term “bipolar disorder” into or-

dinary conversation and gave millions of readers their first intimate portrait of what life with severe

mood illness is like. Jamison received an enormous correspondence — from patients thanking her

for naming their experience, from family members who finally understood, from physicians who

confessed their own hidden diagnoses. She answered as much of it as she could, and she became, al-

most against her will at times, a public spokesperson for mental illness: lecturing, interviewing,

writing, and demonstrating in her own person that a life with bipolar disorder could be one of

achievement and joy.

She has sometimes observed that the memoir cost her a measure of privacy she never fully recov-

ered. But she has also been clear that she would make the choice again. The book’s deepest argument

is that severe mental illness is not a verdict but a condition — one that can be treated, managed, and

lived with, sometimes brilliantly, if patients receive good care and the support of people who love

them.

was a departure in tone and scope. Where Jamison’s earlier

books had explored the textures of mood illness, this one confronted its deadliest outcome. She

examined suicide through multiple lenses: the clinical histories of those who die by suicide, the

neurobiology of self-harm, the epidemiology that makes suicide among the leading causes of death

in young people, and the failures of a mental-health system that often abandons the most vulnerable

at their moment of greatest danger.

The book was also deeply personal. Jamison has acknowledged her own history of suicidal depres-

sion, and she writes about suicide with the moral seriousness of a survivor who understands that the

impulse is not weakness but a symptom — treatable, and often preventable.

Night Falls Fast

was

praised by clinicians and advocates as one of the most important public-health arguments ever

made about suicide, and it remains widely cited in prevention work.

In 2001, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced that Jamison had been

named a MacArthur Fellow — the award popularly known as the “genius grant.” The citation recog-

nized her contributions to the understanding of bipolar disorder and, in particular, her illumination

of the relationship between mood disorders and creativity, along with her work as a memoirist who

had changed public conversation about mental illness. The honor placed her among the most pub-

licly recognized figures in American psychiatry.

The same year marked a significant institutional move. Jamison left UCLA, where she had spent

nearly three decades, and joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in

Baltimore. At Hopkins she took up a senior professorship in psychiatry, became closely involved with

the university’s mood-disorders programs, and eventually was named to a distinguished endowed

chair — the Dalio Professor in Mood Disorders — cementing her position at the center of academic

psychiatry.

The personal landscape of these years was shadowed by loss. Jamison was married to Richard K.

Wyatt, a distinguished psychiatrist and neuropsychopharmacologist at the National Institute of

Mental Health whom she had wed in the late 1980s. Wyatt was a figure of considerable warmth and

scientific achievement, and his presence in her life was, by her own account, a source of steadiness

and joy. In 2002, after a brief illness, he died of lung cancer. The loss was catastrophic, and it would

take Jamison years to find words for it.

Remarkably, her work continued. In 2004 she published

Exuberance: The Passion for Life

, a study of the

temperamental opposite of depression — the buoyant, irrepressible, high-spirited disposition that

she had first observed in her father. The book examined exuberance through the lives of figures such

as Theodore Roosevelt and Charles Darwin, explored its biology and its cultural value, and argued

that enthusiasm is as essential to the human species as sorrow. It was a book about joy, written by a

Nothing Was the Same: A Memoir

. It is a book about love and loss — specifi-

cally, about her marriage to Richard Wyatt, his illness and death, and the long aftermath of grief.

But it is also a book about the earlier loss of her father, and about the way early sorrows are reopened

by later ones. Jamison writes with restraint and precision about the experience of losing the person

who had steadied her, and about the strange double task of the grieving clinician: to suffer, and to

understand one’s own suffering at the same time.

The memoir was widely praised as a profound contribution to the literature of bereavement, and it

deepened her reputation as a writer who could render the most difficult human experiences with

clarity and grace. It also demonstrated something her readers had come to expect: the integration of

scientific knowledge with personal testimony, so that the biology of grief and the texture of grief be-

come parts of a single story.

At Johns Hopkins, Jamison devoted herself to teaching and to the care of patients with treatment-re-

sistant mood disorders. Her clinical work has always been, by her own description, the anchor of her

professional life — the place where the abstractions of research become concrete obligations to par-

ticular people. She became known among trainees for her directness, her demanding standards, and

her conviction that psychiatrists must know severe mental illness from the inside of their patients’

lives, not merely from textbooks.

The major project of these years was a book she had contemplated for two decades: a comprehensive

study of depression itself. It appeared in February 2015 under the title

The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of

Depression

. The phrase “noonday demon” reaches back to the ancient and medieval literature of the

soul — the acedia that descends, in the old texts, at the hour of noon — and Jamison used it to frame

an extraordinary synthesis. The book travels across history, culture, and science: the epidemiology

of depression, its genetics and neurochemistry, its expression in different societies, its representa-

tion in literature and art, and its lived experience, including her own.

The Noonday Demon

was recognized immediately as a landmark. In November 2015 it won the

National Book Award for Nonfiction, one of the highest honors in American letters. Jamison’s accep-

tance remarks — in which she spoke of depression as an illness that isolates, and of the courage re-
