Short Script Writing Examples

While writing novels and short stories are not easy, writing a script out of it is also equally exacting. Script writing involves a lot of details and should you miss one, you would not be able to write a script that is effective enough to be able to tell the complete story.

An effective script would always take into account the visual nature of a film meaning, it will not anymore rely on the imagination of the audience—it will make the audience’s imagination to life possible. Part of its accountability includes the stage directions and the timing in which a book writer may not have included in his or her book or any piece of literature.

Script Writing Tips

Want to get better at your craft? Here are some script writing tips that can surely help you out:

1. Finish your script—no matter how difficult it is.

They say that the cure to writer’s block is writing. If you have difficulty in finishing your script, the actual solution to your dilemma is actually to keep on writing until you will be able to finish your script.

Keep on writing and keep on finishing your script. Do not waste many years thinking about a potential idea or story line without you getting it into writing because time will come when you would be able to forget about it.

If you will be able to complete a lot of work and that you would keep on writing without really worrying about unnecessary things, you will become better and better with your craft.

2. Get inspired by your favorite TV show or film.

Stuck in a rut? Not feeling inspired at all? This is when you should remember why you started. You may have been inspired by all those movies and TV shows that you have watched when you were young. These shows or films may have been the catalyst as to why you want to pursue script writing.

If possible, get a copy of your favorite TV show or film. As you rewatch it, make sure that you would read the show’s or the film’s script. You might be able to see how the scriptwriter has been able to create an action that is effective, plus, you will also be able to see how the director was able to bring to life the action that the scriptwriter like to convey or project.

3. You can never run out inspiration.

Ever had moments when you feel like you are depleted of the drive to finish your script that even your favorite TV shows and movies could not inspire you anymore? You really should not worry because you can seriously never run out of ways to get you inspired to write and finish your script.

You can listen to music, listen to a podcast, read books and magazines, watch busy people from a coffee shop…there are a lot of ways that could help in sparking up your imagination again.

4. Characters always want something.

If you have difficulty in writing and finishing your script, you might have missed one formula and that is to make every single one of the characters of your script to want something. If you want to make your story realistic enough to have every single person in the audience to relate to the story, then you have to make sure that your characters are not perfect and too good to be true (unless that’s what your story is all about).

When your characters want to achieve something, the action of the story would then flow from out of it once they would go out of their way and do whatever means just to get what they want. And do not just focus on making your main characters want something; also share some of the spotlights on the supporting characters.

5. Show; do not just tell.

Your script will become more interesting if your audience would get to know the characters of the story as the central theme and message of the story through their actions.

Have you ever encountered a TV show or a film that you never got to finish just because all the characters were doing was to talk a lot? It’s an indication that the script was not able to effectively execute the story of the show or film since it only relied on the dialogue.

Sure, dialogues are as important as the characters’ action, but it would always be best to let the audience know about the action through what was shown to them instead of just making them rely on the dialogue to the point if ever the audience had not been able to catch on what the characters had said, they would then have a hard time in understanding what the show or movie was all about.

6. It’s not bad to write according to your forte and starting out with what you only know.

Admit it; there is always that genre that you find yourself consistently writing about. This is your forte or the thing that you excel at. If you are good at writing funny scenes and witty punchlines, then writing a script for a sitcom wouldn’t harm.

However, this does not mean that you should only stick to your forte because who knows you may be good at writing horror even though you have been accustomed to writing comedy? But if you are just starting and that you only know one kind of genre, do not attempt at writing a whole new one because it will either require you ten years of research about it or that you will only end up feeling frustrated because for sure, you will not be able to finish one with an outcome that is satisfying.

7. Free your script from cliche.

If you want your script to stand out from the rest then make sure that you will be able to break free from anything that is cliche.

If you are worried about having to form a character that is cliche, then you have to change and tweak some things such as their age, sex, class, and occupation. If you are worried about writing a cliche scene, then you have to make sure that you make it as unique as possible to the point that you will not be able to identify any book, show, or film that reminds you of what you have written.

However, be careful when trying to break free from anything that is cliche because the tendency is that you might just force things and it would result to an ineffective script that will not totally appeal to anyone. Just make sure that you are not going too overboard with your attempts at avoiding a cliche scene or character.

8. Do not be afraid to make mistakes.

You might have heard of writer’s block, which is also known as the writer’s fear. Usually, the reason behind having a writer’s block does not lie in the inability to produce words but it is the fear of making mistakes.

The fear of making mistakes is what stops you from producing any output. The fear of thinking that nobody will ever like your work will hinder you from achieving anything at all. And if ever you keep on feeding this fear regularly, it will come to a point that it will be with you for as long as it takes. This is when you would consider having a “writer’s block.”

Even if you have to start with writing cliche lines, you have to keep on going. Even if you only know one genre and style of writing, all the more that you should keep on going. This is how you are going to hone and master your craft.

9. Keep on watching more TV shows and films and reading scripts.

If you are deprived of the opportunities where you can relate to the old adage that goes “experience is the best teacher,” then you can at least immerse yourself into other opportunities where you will still be able to learn more about this craft or skill that you so badly want to pursue.

One way to do so is by watching more TV shows and films where you will be able to learn other people’s script writing styles. By just intently observing every scene and line of the show or film you are watching, you will already be able to learn a lot about how the scriptwriter was able to convey the message and the actions he or she may have wanted to convey.
